AI can calculate a construction quote up to the point where an estimator signs it, and that is the point. It reads drawings and the specification into a bill of quantities, prices the items from your own unit rates and post-calculations, drafts the quote and flags what is missing or unusual. It does not replace the estimator's judgement on risk, margin and the details the drawings do not show. Construction is the sector where this is least used: only 8.9% of Dutch construction firms with 10 or more employees used AI in 2024, against 22.7% across all sectors (CBS AI Monitor 2024), and nearly four in ten construction and property companies put their failure costs at 5% of revenue or more (ABN AMRO, survey 2019). A quote that is calculated consistently is where both numbers move.

Three things, and a good supplier says so before the demo. It cannot see what is not on the drawing: the ground conditions, the access, the client who changes the brief. It cannot know that a price moved last week unless your supplier quotes are in the system. And it produces a confident number for an unusual detail exactly as easily as for a routine one, which is why every item carries a confidence flag and why the estimator's signature stays on the quote. Under the Wkb the quality burden already sits with the builder; a calculation nobody can explain is a liability, not a saving.
The software the sector runs matters too. Whether you calculate in Ibis (Brink), Bouw7, KPD, Syntess Atrium or Admicom, the AI layer has to write back into that system and into your ERP or accounting package, or the estimator ends up retyping. Integration is usually half the project.
