About Crux Digits

Crux Digits is a boutique AI consultancy and development partner for Dutch SMEs (MKB), based in Nieuwegein in the Utrecht region. Bilingual (EN/NL), with transparent fixed pricing — a €2,500 AI audit, a €20,000 proof of concept and a production build from €50,000 — delivered by a named expert (founder Tom Joseph), with 13 real case studies, EU AI Act- and GDPR-ready. A focused alternative to the large enterprise consultancies.

What it is

What does an AI development agency do?

An AI development agency builds working AI software — not just advice, but code that runs. Where a consultancy stops at a report, a development agency takes the solution from first prototype to a production system that is integrated with your existing tools and maintained over time. Crux Digits operates as a full-stack AI solutions company: one senior team covers strategy, engineering and maintenance, so the people who scope the system are the people who ship it.

At Crux Digits you get both under one roof: the strategic eye of a consultant and an engineering team that actually builds it. No handover between vendors, no knowledge lost in translation. Want the strategy first? See our AI consulting in the Netherlands.

What we build

AI software we develop

We build custom AI around your process and data — not a generic tool you have to bend your business around:

01

Custom AI applications & SaaS

Full web applications and platforms with AI at the core — from internal tools to customer-facing products.

02

AI agents & process automation

Agents that take actions across your systems: pulling data, deciding within rules, routing tasks and escalating exceptions.

03

Machine learning models

Prediction, classification and anomaly detection, trained on your data and deployed inside your stack.

04

LLM & generative AI solutions

Grounded assistants and RAG systems built on your own knowledge — with source citation and guardrails.

05

Computer vision

Visual inspection, detection and quality control — on the edge or in the cloud.

06

Data engineering & integration

Pipelines, warehouses and connectors to ERP, CRM and APIs — the foundation every model runs on.

Approach

A working MVP by the second call

Most agencies disappear after the first call and come back with a thick document. We don't. Once we understand your problem, we build a working MVP you can click — and shape it with you. We work in three fixed, transparent steps:

01

AI Audit & Strategy — €2,500

A prioritised opportunity list with ROI per use case and a clear build plan.

02

Proof of Concept — €20,000

Working AI on your own data, in weeks — not months.

03

Production Launch — from €50,000

A full system, integrated, in production and maintained.

How a build runs

What a custom AI build actually looks like in practice

A build at Crux Digits never starts with a specification document — it starts with a working session. In the first call we walk through your process: what comes in, who decides what, where time and money leak out — and pick the one use case that moves the needle. By the second call there is a clickable MVP running on your own sample data. That prototype is not a demo for show; it is the instrument we use together to decide what is essential, what needs improving and what gets cut. From there we build in short sprints with fixed checkpoints, so you see the system take shape every week and can steer before anything becomes expensive to change.

The production phase is about integration and reliability rather than new features. We connect the system to your ERP, CRM or databases through standard APIs, set up monitoring for accuracy and drift, and document everything — code, models, pipelines and a runbook. At handover you own all of it outright, and your own team can take over maintenance if you want; we stay available for support and further development. A Proof of Concept typically takes four to six weeks; a full production launch runs three to six months depending on integrations and compliance requirements. Every phase has a scope and price agreed before work starts.

Build vs buy

When does custom AI development pay off — and when not?

Having AI custom-built is not always the right answer, and an honest development agency says so out loud. Off-the-shelf AI tools are fine when your problem is generic: a standard chatbot, transcription, or writing suggestions. Custom wins as soon as one of four things is true: the tool needs to understand your specific process and domain language; you need deep integration with your existing systems; your data is too sensitive to send to an external SaaS; or the competitive advantage lies precisely in software your competitors cannot buy. In those cases the cost of working around a generic tool quickly exceeds the investment in your own solution.

We do that arithmetic before the build, not after it. The €2,500 audit produces a projected ROI per use case: what it costs, what it saves or earns per year, and how fast it pays back. If custom does not come out ahead, we recommend an existing tool — that is sometimes the advice, and it keeps the relationship honest. If it does come out ahead, you know exactly what you are signing up for: fixed price, fixed scope, and code that belongs to you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an AI development agency and an AI consultancy?

A consultancy advises where AI adds value; a development agency actually builds the solution and takes it to production. Crux Digits does both with a single team, so nothing is lost between advice and delivery.

How much does it cost to have custom AI developed?

We work in fixed steps: AI Audit & Strategy €2,500, Proof of Concept €20,000 and Production Launch from €50,000 (excl. VAT). The audit always includes a projected ROI, so you know the return before you commit.

Who owns the source code and models?

You do. All source code, trained models, pipelines and documentation are fully transferred to you at handover — no vendor lock-in, no ongoing licence fees.

Can you integrate with our existing systems?

Yes. Integration-first is our default — we connect via standard APIs, database connections or data pipelines to your ERP, CRM and other systems, without asking you to replace them.

Can you work with our internal development team?

Yes. We can lead the full build, embed with your developers, or hand over a clean, documented codebase for your team to own. We agree the model up front.

How quickly can we start?

Most clients start within 5 business days of agreeing scope. A free 30-minute consultation is usually scheduled within days.

How do I compare AI service providers in the Netherlands?

Compare on four things: whether they ship production systems (not demos), whether you own the code and models, whether pricing is fixed and public, and how they handle EU AI Act and GDPR. Crux Digits publishes its prices — €2,500 audit, €20,000 PoC, production from €50,000 — so you can benchmark before a first call.

Choosing an AI development agency in the Netherlands

The Dutch market for custom AI software development splits into two camps that rarely overlap. On one side sit the large enterprise consultancies — Xebia, Xomnia, Capgemini — built for corporates with seven-figure budgets and a procurement department. On the other sit web agencies that added an "AI" line over a weekend and resell whatever API is trending, with no machine learning engineer in the building. For a Dutch SME (MKB), neither fits: one is too heavy and expensive, the other too shallow to ship anything that survives contact with real data.

Crux Digits is built for the gap between them. As a boutique, senior-led AI development agency (AI-ontwikkelbureau) based in Nieuwegein in the Utrecht region, we pair the strategic depth of the big firms with the speed and price of a small team — and the senior who scopes your project stays on it through launch. No junior bench to absorb your budget, no account manager between you and the people writing the code. For an SME weighing an AI development agency Netherlands-wide, seniority and ownership are the whole point.

What makes Crux a senior-led, boutique partner

The same engineers from first call to handover

At larger firms, the expert who impresses you in the sales meeting is rarely the person who builds your system. We work the opposite way. The senior who runs your AI Audit & Strategy is the same one in your sprint reviews and at launch. That continuity is why a Proof of Concept can land in four to six weeks rather than stall in onboarding.

You end up owning the solution

We design every engagement so that you, not us, hold the keys at the end. Source code, trained models, data pipelines and documentation transfer to you in full — no licence that quietly renews, no black box only we can maintain. If you ever want to bring the work in-house or switch partners, nothing stops you — rare among agencies whose model depends on you never leaving.

Custom AI software, machine learning and AI app development

"AI development" covers a wide range of work, and the right approach depends on the problem. Across our 13 case studies — spanning healthcare, computer vision, NLP and forecasting — the work usually falls into a few recognisable shapes:

  • Machine learning development — predictive and classification models trained on your own historical data: demand forecasting, churn and risk scoring, anomaly detection in operations or finance. These are bespoke models, not generic predictions bolted onto your dashboard.
  • AI app development — full applications with intelligence at the core, whether an internal tool that triages incoming work or a customer-facing product that needs AI to function. See application development for how we build and ship these.
  • Generative AI and LLM systems — assistants grounded in your own documents with citations and guardrails, so answers come from your knowledge base rather than a model's imagination. Our generative AI and LLM optimisation work focuses on accuracy and traceability over novelty.
  • Computer vision — visual inspection, detection and quality control running on the edge or in the cloud, common in logistics, manufacturing and construction.

The common thread is fit. We build AI around your process and data, so it speaks your domain language instead of forcing your team onto a generic tool.

Compliance built in: EU AI Act and AVG from day one

For Dutch and European businesses, an AI system that ignores regulation is a liability waiting to surface. We treat the EU AI Act and the GDPR/AVG as engineering requirements, not paperwork added at the end. From the first design decision we classify where a use case sits under the AI Act's risk tiers, keep personal data minimised and documented for AVG, and record how each model reaches its decisions so the system can be explained to an auditor, regulator or customer.

This matters most in the sectors we serve — healthcare, finance, logistics, e-commerce and marketing — where data is sensitive and the rules are tightening. Building compliance in from day one is far cheaper than retrofitting it after launch, and it is a clear reason Dutch SMEs choose a local partner who knows the regulatory ground over an offshore team that does not.

How Crux compares to the alternatives

A large enterprise consultancy will deliver, but you pay for layers of management and rarely own what you commissioned. A repackaged web agency quotes cheaply but lacks the depth to take a model from demo to production and keep it accurate. A boutique AI development agency sits between them on cost while matching the enterprise firms on the part that counts — shipping a maintained system that works.

  • Versus enterprise consultancies — comparable engineering quality, a fraction of the overhead, and code you own outright. No six-month discovery phase before a line is written.
  • Versus "AI" web agencies — real machine learning and data engineering capability, with EU AI Act and AVG compliance handled properly rather than ignored.
  • For marketing and web agencies — we are not a competitor. Crux serves agencies as a white-label AI engineering partner, building the models and systems behind the work you deliver to your own clients.

Transparent pricing and how to start

Most agencies hide the number until they have you on a call. We publish ours. Engagements move through three fixed steps (excl. VAT): an AI Audit & Strategy at EUR 2,500, a Proof of Concept at EUR 20,000, and a production launch from EUR 50,000, with guidance around EUR 150 per hour for ad-hoc work. Each step has its scope and price agreed before work begins, and the audit includes a projected return per use case — so you know the payback before committing to the build. Full detail sits on the pricing page.

The simplest place to begin is the audit. In a short working session we map your process, find where AI genuinely pays off, and say plainly when an off-the-shelf tool would serve you better than a custom build. If you want strategy first, our AI consulting in the Netherlands covers that conversation — or reach us at info@cruxdigits.nl or +31 6 44384676 to scope a project anywhere in the Netherlands or Europe.
