Utrecht province concentrates business services, IT, healthcare and construction in a small radius, and a genuine local AI market has grown around it. This is the honest version of the local landscape — including the free, publicly funded route that commercial lists never mention, because it costs them a lead.

The Utrecht region has a real local AI market, and one free entry point. Before hiring anyone, check the MKB-werkplaats Utrecht, which runs publicly funded AI programmes for regional SMEs at no cost. If you need a commercial partner, agencies genuinely based or working in the region include Amersfoort.ai, Crux Digits (Nieuwegein), Flireo (Amersfoort), mAIxs and ROTZ.AI, with national firms such as SPAIK also serving the province.
Every firm below was found through public search on the query this page answers, then checked against four criteria. We list what we could verify, and we say so when we could not.
If you are an SME in the Utrecht region and have not yet started with AI, look at the MKB-werkplaats Utrecht before you buy anything. These are publicly funded programmes that connect regional SMEs with students and coaches to work on a concrete digitalisation or AI question, at no cost to you.
The trade-off is real: you get student capacity on a fixed academic timeline rather than a senior engineer on your deadline, and the output is usually an exploration rather than a production system. But for "where would AI even help us", that is often exactly the right shape — and no commercial roundup will tell you, because a free option is a lost lead. Regional funding via ROM Utrecht Region is also worth checking; our free subsidiecheck shows what applies in your province.
Alphabetical, not ranked. "Based in region" means an actual regional office, not a city landing page — several national agencies publish per-city pages for search purposes without having anyone there, which is legitimate marketing but should not be mistaken for local presence.
| Agency | Base | Focus | Regional presence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amersfoort.ai | Amersfoort | Data & AI advisory, AI-readiness | Based in region |
| Crux Digits | Nieuwegein | Build-focused: audit €2,500, PoC €20,000, production from €50,000 | Based in region |
| Flireo | Amersfoort | IT strategy with AI consultancy | Based in region |
| mAIxs | Utrecht region | Advice, implementation, automation, training, pilots | Based in region |
| Ploko | National | AI with marketing and websites | City landing pages |
| ROTZ.AI | Utrecht | Agents, automation, integration and ongoing support | Based in region |
| SPAIK | Amsterdam | Mid-market, adoption-led; states it works across Utrecht province on site | Serves region |
Less than local agencies imply, and more than remote-first ones admit.
It does not matter for the build itself. AI development is remote work; the code does not know where it was written, and a better-suited firm two hours away beats a convenient one next door.
It does matter for three things. Discovery goes faster when someone can spend a morning watching how your team actually works rather than inferring it from a call. Adoption improves when training happens in the room. And for manufacturing, logistics or construction, the physical process usually has to be seen to be understood.
The practical test: will this project need anyone on your premises more than twice? If yes, a two-hour travel radius is a real advantage. If not, choose on fit and price and ignore geography.
Disclosure: Crux Digits is one of the firms on this page. We built the list, so treat our own entry with the scepticism that deserves — and check the others' sites yourself. There are no affiliate links, no paid placements and no reciprocal-listing deals anywhere on this page. The order is alphabetical, not a ranking.
Crux Digits is based in Nieuwegein, so this is our home market and we are the least neutral party on this page. Two honest notes. First: if you have not started with AI at all, the free MKB-werkplaats route above may serve you better than paying us. Second: "local" is a weak reason to hire anyone for software — if a firm elsewhere fits your problem better, hire them. We list our neighbours here because a regional guide that only recommends its author is not a guide.
We are in Nieuwegein and happy to come to you. Twenty minutes, no deck — including an honest steer if a free route fits you better.
