The best AI agencies for Dutch SMEs in 2026

Most "top 10 AI companies in the Netherlands" lists are enterprise lists — Deloitte, Accenture, Capgemini, IBM — written by a firm that put itself at number one. None of that helps a 20-person wholesaler. This list only contains firms that publicly show work at SME scale, and it tells you which one fits which situation.

For a Dutch SME, the useful shortlist is small. Of the agencies marketing AI to Dutch business, a minority publish prices, and fewer still show work at 10–250 employees. Published, checkable specifics — prices, durations or named deliverables on their own pages. A firm that publishes nothing gets listed, but is marked as such.
Reachable and current — a live site and a findable decision-maker as of the verification date.
Honest fit — we name who each firm is the better choice for, including where that is not us.

What the price differences actually tell you

The spread is not a quality ranking — it is three different products.

UnifyAI's €1,500 floor buys one bounded agent on an existing SaaS stack. That is the right purchase if you have one clearly painful, well-defined task and no integration work. It is the wrong purchase if the process spans four systems that disagree with each other.

SPAIK's €14,500 Kickstart buys a fixed four-week engagement where the deliverable is adoption as much as software. Their own material leads with people trained and ROI horizon rather than model architecture. If your problem is that staff won't use the tool you already bought, that framing is the honest match.

The €20,000–€50,000 tier — where our own proof-of-concept and production steps sit — is what custom integration against legacy ERP actually costs when it has to survive contact with real data. Below roughly €15,000 nobody is doing bespoke integration work at a sustainable margin; if a quote at that level promises it, ask precisely what is being built and what is being configured.

The honest summary: if a well-scoped tool solves your problem, buy the tool. Custom build earns its money when the process is genuinely yours and no product fits it.

The gap

Why the other roundups do not help you

We checked the lists that currently rank for "best AI agency Netherlands". Two problems recur.

DataNorth's "Top 10 AI Consulting Companies in the Netherlands" lists Deloitte, Accenture, Capgemini, KPMG, PwC, IBM, Sogeti, TCS and Xebia — alongside itself at number one. Every one of those is an excellent firm and not one of them will take a €20,000 first project from a 30-person company. No selection criteria are stated.

Ploko's "10 beste AI bureaus van Nederland" names itself first, publishes no methodology and no prices, and mixes agencies with software platforms (Dataiku) and an ecosystem body (Brainport AI Hub) as though they were comparable purchases.

Neither list is dishonest, exactly. Both are marketing pages wearing the clothes of a buyer's guide. The test to apply to any such list — including this one — is simple: does it state its criteria, does it publish numbers, and does it ever recommend someone other than the author?

Choosing

A decision path that takes about ten minutes

Work down this list and stop at the first line that describes you.

The task is one well-defined process and lives in one or two systems → buy a bounded agent at the €1,500–€10,000 tier, or check whether an off-the-shelf tool already does it.
You have bought AI tools and nobody uses them → the problem is adoption, not technology. Pick an adoption-led firm and a training budget.
You do not yet know where AI pays off in your business → buy a fixed-price audit, not a build. It should cost low thousands and end in a ranked list with an ROI estimate.
The process spans your ERP and two other systems and is genuinely specific to you → this is custom build territory; budget from €20,000 and ask for a proof of concept on your own data first.

Questions to ask

Five questions that separate builders from deck-writers

Ask every firm on your shortlist, including us:

"Who exactly writes the code, and can I meet them before signing?" — at SME scale the named engineer is the product.
"What is the fixed price and what specifically voids it?" — a fixed price with unlimited scope caveats is an hourly rate in disguise.
"Show me something you built that is still running a year later." — pilots are easy; production survival is not.
"What happens to this system if you stop working with us?" — ask about code ownership, hosting and handover in writing.
"What would make you tell me not to do this project?" — a firm with no such answer will sell you the project regardless.

Which AI agency is best for a Dutch SME?

There is no single best — the useful question is which tier fits your problem. For one bounded process, an agent at €1,500–€10,000 (UnifyAI and similar). For staff adoption, an adoption-led firm such as SPAIK (Kickstart €14,500). For custom integration against your ERP, a build partner from €20,000. Buy the smallest step that answers your actual question.

What does an AI project cost for an SME in the Netherlands?

From published 2026 prices: a bounded agent runs €1,500–€25,000 one-off with €200–€2,000/month after; a fixed four-week implementation is around €14,500; a fixed-price audit is €2,500–€5,000; a custom proof of concept is roughly €20,000 and production builds start around €50,000. Most Dutch SMEs spend €5,000–€50,000 on a first implementation.

Why are the big consultancies not on this list?

Deloitte, Accenture, Capgemini, IBM and Xebia are genuinely excellent, and they are built for enterprise transformation budgets and timelines. They will not take a €20,000 first project from a 30-person company. Lists that put them under the heading "for Dutch business" are not wrong about quality — they are answering a different question.

Should I hire a freelancer instead of an agency?

For a bounded, well-specified task a senior freelancer is often the better economics. The trade-off is continuity: when the freelancer moves on, the system has no owner. Ask any firm — freelancer or agency — what happens to your system if the relationship ends, and get the answer about code ownership and handover in writing.

Can we get subsidy for an AI project?

Often, partly. Custom AI development usually qualifies as R&D under WBSO, which reduces your own payroll tax rather than paying a supplier invoice. Regional innovation vouchers may apply. How do I check a roundup like this one is honest?

Three tests. Does it state its selection criteria before the list? Does it publish checkable numbers rather than adjectives? Does it ever recommend a firm other than its author? A list that fails all three is an advertisement, however useful its layout.
